Mid-term review

The students received a mid-term review packet today. The mid-term will consist of 2 passages that require multiple-choice and open-ended responses. The students will also complete an essay dealing with the topic of morality as it is presented in Montana 1948, The Stranger, and The Pearl.

Throughout the novella, the pearl of the world has gone through several symbolic changes. At different points it represents different things to the characters and the audience. In a well-organized essay you must present 3 different interpretations of what the pearl represents in the novella. You must support your findings with examples from the text. Remember, it can mean different things to different people-including the reader.

What are the reactions of the townspeople to the pearl? Why? What does Kino believe about the pearl? Why? Who else comes to visit? What differences do you notice in the behavior of these men toward Kino, Juana, and Coyotito? Why does their behavior seem to change?

What happens in the middle of the night? Why? Why does Juana say that the pearl is evil? What does she say will be the consequences of this evil? Why does Kino disagree with her? Why do Juana and Kino “begin this day with hope”?

What work does Kino do? Where does he do it? What is “the one thing of value that he owned in the world”? From whom did Kino inherit this thing? Why is this thing important to Kino, and why is it important to the story?
List three details that are used to describe the Gulf. How might these details also describe the characters? How are these details important to the story? What does Kino find in the Gulf? How does each of the three main characters respond to Kino’s find?

Parable-a short allegorical story designed to illustrate or teach some truth, religious principle, or moral lesson.

Opening Page
What is the story that is told in the town? What are the results of the story having been “told so often”? What is the purpose of telling the story?
Who are the three main characters of the story? How can you tell?

Chapter 1
List the major events in the first chapter. Why are these events important? What different songs or music does Kino hear in his mind? How are these songs related to the major events of the chapter?
Where did the doctor live before living in the town? Of what race and social class is the doctor? Of what race and social class is Kino? What is the doctor’s attitude toward people of Kino’s race and social class? What is Kino’s attitude toward the doctor? What is the narrator’s attitude toward the doctor? How can you tell?
