What work does Kino do? Where does he do it? What is “the one thing of value that he owned in the world”? From whom did Kino inherit this thing? Why is this thing important to Kino, and why is it important to the story?
List three details that are used to describe the Gulf. How might these details also describe the characters? How are these details important to the story? What does Kino find in the Gulf? How does each of the three main characters respond to Kino’s find?
Students then worked on a Study Island assignment.
