What are the reactions of the townspeople to the pearl? Why? What does Kino believe about the pearl? Why? Who else comes to visit? What differences do you notice in the behavior of these men toward Kino, Juana, and Coyotito? Why does their behavior seem to change?
What happens in the middle of the night? Why? Why does Juana say that the pearl is evil? What does she say will be the consequences of this evil? Why does Kino disagree with her? Why do Juana and Kino “begin this day with hope”?
